Dead Week (Days 178-179)

Both today and tomorrow I am interviewing for a position for next year. I believe that a true sub really does take over my classes this time. (Having a sub on Days 178-179 is a bit awkward, but remember that I myself was the sub last year on Days 179-180.) Thus I don't have much to say in this post.

Chapter 14 Quiz (Day 135)

Today in Stats, we take the Chapter 14 Quiz on Illuminate. But there's one question that I don't like based on how it confuses students during the pre-quiz VNPS review session in second period: A multiple-choice quiz has five questions and four answer choices per question. What is the probability of getting all five questions right by pure guessing? The answer, of course, is (1/4)^5. But if entered on a calculator, the answer is 9.765625E-4. Our TI calculators switch to E-notation as soon as the answer is less than 0.001 = 1/1000, which this answer just  barely  is (1/1024). I'm afraid that this E-notation might confuse students. I consider going onto Illuminate and changing the question right then and there, but I don't have time In fourth period. Instead of asking about a five-question quiz, I change it to just four questions.  At any rate, I'm glad I did the VNPS before the quiz -- it helped the students  and  me. Chapter 4: Exploring Quantitative Data, Continued (Days 21-22)

Today in Stats, we continue with the next six pages in Chapter 4, "Exploring Quantitative Data." These pages cover one more type of distribution -- the dotplot -- as well as the mode, median, and range of a particular distribution. This means that it's time for another Sarah Carter activity. Since my classes are so small, I'm including all of my Stats classes -- both general and Ethnostats -- in the dotplot. I begin by telling them that I've visited fifteen states -- California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Maryland, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Chapter 11: Observational Studies and Experiments, Continued (Day 93)

Today in Ethnostats, we...did  not  take the Chapter 11 Quiz. Not only has the upcoming schedule still not been updated (and thus no minimum day can be confirmed), but absences continue to be a problem in fourth period. A whopping six students (out of 13 total) are absent today, including all five girls again. If my goal is to improve female achievement in that class (and it is), then the last thing I want to do is give a quiz when all of them are absent. The best way to help out my girls is to wait for their safe return. The lack of a clear minimum day schedule is infuriating -- but again, the priority right now is dealing with COVID, not updating the schedule. With so many students out for the virus, it's highly probable that I've come in contact with someone who tested positive. Even if Monday is a regular day, we're not out of the woods yet. The possibility remains that January 31st could be a minimum day. If it is, then it makes sense to give those quizzes in Calculus ...
